The following information about the vehicle impoundment program is provided by SGI:
Vehicle impoundments are based on the actions of the driver and are the consequence for a variety of offenses. The vehicle that you're driving at the time of the occurrence is the one that will be impounded, even if it's not your vehicle.
Any vehicle can be impounded including passenger vehicles, trucks, commercial trucks, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, and golf carts while being driven on public property.
It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to ensure the person driving the vehicle has a valid driver's licence.
Even if the driver is not the vehicle owner, the vehicle will be impounded. If the driver is not the vehicle owner, the vehicle owner is notified by police and must pay all towing and storage fees to get their vehicle back at the end of the impoundment period. The vehicle owner may attempt to recover these costs from the driver through the courts.
The vehicle owner is also responsible for taking all reasonable steps, depending on the particular situation, to ensure that every person who drives his or her vehicle has a valid driver's licence.
