Vehicle recovery
The driver of the PT Cruiser was east bound on a gravel road, lost control, rolled twice in the ditch, jumped over the fence around this dugout, then rolled three more times and ended up in the middle of the dugout. Estimated speed when the car left the road was near 105 miles per hour, according to RCMP. The car rolled end over end an estimated five or six times and cleared a four-wire barbed fence. It never touched the fence or any posts. The depth of the dugout was 30 to 35 feet. The lone driver was not wearing his seatbelt and was able to escape through the sunroof which popped out. The vehicle had power windows and locks, which wouldn't open. He was fortunate to get out, because the seatbelt had so much pressure on it from the car twisting and rolling that we had to cut it with a knife in order to open the door. It was wrapped around the seat somehow. The driver would never have been able to get out had he been wearing that belt. RCMP divers were used. We found the vehicle, which was upright on the bottom of the dugout. The divers slipped a small strap through the rim, and we pulled it out that way. It was then loaded on a flatdeck and taken back to Yorkton. The accident and recovery happened near the Fishing Lake Reserve north of Foam Lake.
